After the outbreak of WW II, Allied forces desperately needed a bridge that was easy to transport and assemble and could handle with the -increasing weight of new tanks. This project was commissioned by Sir Donnelberry of the British Royal Engineers. It began to be designed in 1940 and in July 1941 went into mass production. It was named after the designer, Sir Donnelberry. The advantage of this assembly bridge is that it is simple and does not require special tools and heavy equipment for assembly. Later, this prefabricated bridge had an excellent function during the European War, allowing the Allied forces to cross rivers, in a short period of time, when their bridge was damaged by German and Italian forces. After the war, this prefabricated bridge helped repair various areas affected by the war. Its improved version is still widely used around the world.
