Due to the needs of the war, the Germans adopted a recycling policy and placed the artillery in a suitable chassis of old tanks for reuse. One of the frames used is the PanzerKampfwagen IV tank, so many of these tanks were modified into anti-aircraft or anti-tank self-propelled guns. At the end of 1943, three prototype Panzer IVs equipped with Flak.37 8.8 cm anti-aircraft guns were built for testing. The original idea was to provide the armored division with a mobile anti-aircraft to protect the tanks from air attacks. In 1944, two of the test vehicles were modified with 8.8 cm Flak.41 anti-aircraft guns and it remained a unique vehicle that was still equipped with 8.8 cm Flak.37 and was sent to the Italian front for actual testing. The other two test vehicles of the Flak.41 8.8 cm anti-aircraft gun were very successful after the tests were carried out, but the war ended before mass production was decided.
