The XXIII type and the larger XXI type are small offshore defense submarines developed by Germany at the same time. The research and development work started at the end of 1942, but unfortunately the XXII, which was more advanced and used the same hull design, was never completed. The hull of the XXIII type submarine is produced in different factories in different regions in a block mode, and then transported to the shipyard for subsequent assembly processing procedures. This arrangement is mainly to make the submarine small enough to be transported by rail. The boat has a displacement of only 258 tons and is powered by a 572-horsepower MWM 6-cylinder diesel engine and a 572-horsepower AEG electric motor. In addition, it is equipped with a small slow-speed motor with only 35 horsepower. These three motors simultaneously drive a single drive shaft. The cruise speed of the boat is 9.7 nautical miles per hour and the submersible speed is 12.5 nautical miles. If the cruise speed is 8 knots on the surface, it can continue to sail 4,800 kilometers. The weaponry is 2 torpedo tubes capable of launching 2 torpedoes. Type XXIII submarines were produced in Germany, France, Italy, Russia and other places. A total of 61 submarines were completed before the war ended. But only 6 ships were actually used to perform missions. Among them, U 2336 sank the latter merchant ship in European waters on May 7, 1945 before the end of WW II.
