SU-152 is a large assault self-propelled howitzer developed from the KV heavy tank chassis. The Battle of Stalingrad revealed that the Red Army urgently needed more modern self-propelled artillery to replace its towed artillery. The Russian military authorities issued an order in November 1942 to develop a self-propelled 152mm artillery program. Although the KV-2 in use is already equipped with an M-10 152 mm gun, its turret design is not ideal. The plan was to install the ML-20 152mm howitzer in the low artillery room on the chassis of the KV 1s tank. It took only 25 days from the design to the production of the shape. This new self-propelled howitzer was officially named SU-152 in January 1943 and was put into production in the workshop of the Chelyabinsk tank factory. The outstanding design of the SU-152 proved to be not only a superior assault gun, but also capable of destroying German Tiger and Panther tanks at a long distance. This earned SU-152 the nickname "Zveroboy" or "Beast Killer". In the spring of 1943, the self-propelled artillery added a machine gun to the front of the vehicle to defend against close-range attacks by enemy infantry. Although the SU-152 was praised, the improved version of the vehicle ended production in December 1943.
