In 1942, the German army, in response to needs, removed the upper body and turret of 48 H39 tanks and refitted them with a German 10.5 caliber leFH18 L/28 howitzer, and installed new armor on the upper part of the tank. These modified self-propelled grenade guns served with the 155 Artillery Brigade of the German 21 Armored Division in Normandy, France. After landing in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, the Allied forces suffered a lot from these German modified grenade self-propelled guns.
