The USS "New York" is the successor to the "San Antonio" class dock landing ship, designated by the US Navy as LPD-21, which is used for amphibious operations. The'San Antonio' class is the first dock landing ship designed with a concealment function, mainly to reduce the hull's radar reflections. The US Navy plans to build a total of 10 such ships. The main construction steel of USS "New York" was collected from the ruins of the World Trade Center destroyed by terrorist attacks in 2001. The ship has a speed of approximately 22 knots and can carry 5 helicopters, 14 amphibious assault vehicles and 2 landing hovercraft. Defensive weapons include anti-aircraft missile launchers and Bushmaster 30mm artillery. The operating crew includes 28 officers and 333 sailors also can carry 66 officers and 633 soldiers. The USS "New York" was put into service with the US Navy in August 2009.
